Changing web hosting providers is a simple process, which can be accomplished with minimal hassle and downtime provided certain steps are followed in order. This guide lays out the steps in switching to a new and successful web hosting experience with WireNine.
-
Sign up for our web hosting
The first step would be to find the perfect web hosting package for your website. We have a wide variety of plans, that will help give your website the extra edge. You can choose from our Shared Plans or our Reseller Plans. Most importantly remember not to cancel your server with your old hosting provider, or tell them you are moving because they can terminate your site early; which will result in downtime.
-
Backup your files
Probably the most important step when changing to a new hosting provider. Make sure you backup all your files, and also check to make sure that you have a full working copy of your website files, folders, and databases stored on your computer. Secondly, download anything that has significance to you or your website, such as email address settings, passwords, statistic reports, etc. from your current provider.
-
Transfering your data
This is where you get your website functioning. After paying for your plan with us, you will then receive an email. In the email you have a lot of important details, such as your logins to cpanel and ftp. You should then upload all your files to your new account with us, install and configure any databases, scripts, etc. and also setup any other significant files. You can test your website with your temporary address provided in the welcome email.
If you are having trouble transfering your data, Nixism allow's for free transfers under 250 MB. Meaning we will transfer your site free of charge as long as it is under 250 MB. This feature comes standard with any plan you purchase on nixism.
-
Changing your Domain's DNS
Once you are finished testing your site with your temporary address, you can then put it live. In order to put it live, you will need to change your DNS (Domain NameServers). To do this, you will have to log into your domain registrar and look for the DNS area.
Your name servers should look something like:
ns1.nixism.com
ns2.nixism.com
Once you have changed your DNS over to us, you will then need to allow up to 24to 48 hours for your DNS to propagate worldwide. During this period of time, your site might be working for one minute then be offline the next. If after the 48 hours and your site is still not working, then submit a ticket to your support department immediately.
If you have any questions we would be more then happy to assist you, or even make the DNS changes for you. -
Say good bye to your old provider
After you have completed the steps above you can then say goodbte to your old web host.
